DDDC Briefs International Community in Sudan
12/03/2008
The Darfur – Darfur Dialogue and Consultation (DDDC) briefs international community in Sudan on current activities in Darfur and other DDDC matters.
KHARTOUM, SUDAN – On Monday, December 1, 2008, the Darfur – Darfur Dialogue and Consultation (DDDC), an autonomous and non-politicized process owned by Darfurians, briefed the international community in Sudan on its current activities in Darfur and other closely related matters. The briefing, chaired by the DDDC Secretariat, Mr. Abdul Mohammed, brought together more than thirty members of the diplomatic corps, donors, United Nations agencies, and others.
Mr. Mohammed gave an overview of the DDDC, including how the ongoing DDDC consultations are serving as a mechanism that provides space to Darfurians to voice their views and opinions on peace and reconciliation in Darfur, discussed ongoing Sudan peace initiatives, and reviewed the main issues effecting pending elections in Sudan.
DDDC staff members addressed the common ground consultations the DDDC is facilitating with specific stakeholders, including Internally Displaced Persons, tribal leaders, women, youth, civil society groups, and native administrators, in North, South, and West Darfur states. They discussed the consultation methodology, shared findings from recently concluded consultations, and touched upon pending activities.
Dr. Alex De Waal, a Sudan expert, fellow of the Harvard University Global Equity Initiative, and a director of Justice Africa in London, provided a fresh political analysis and overview on Sudan and discussed the value of and way forward for the DDDC.
Members of the international community who attended and strongly participated in the DDDC briefing include the African Union, European Union, representatives from the embassies of Japan, United Kingdom, Sweden, the United States, Denmark, Germany, France, Norway, the Netherlands, the World Bank, the Darfur Community Peace and Stability Fund (DCPSF), and Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS).
