Press Release: DDDC Consultation with South Darfur Civil Society
09/28/2009
DDDC to facilitate consultation with civil society organizations from across South Darfur State.
The Darfur–Darfur Dialogue and Consultation (DDDC) will facilitate a statewide consultation with civil society organizations in Nyala, South Darfur, on October 4 – 5, 2009.
The DDDC, an autonomous, inclusive, non–partisan process mandated to enable Darfurians to voice their opinions and views to achieve sustainable peace and reconciliation in Darfur, is bringing together civil society organization representatives from South Darfur’s fifteen localities to discuss the root causes of the Darfur conflict and build consensus around common ground issues.
The South Darfur civil society organization consultation will take place as follows:
Sunday, October 4 – Monday, October 5, 2009
9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
University Center for Peace and Development Studies
Nyala, South Darfur
During day one of the consultation, participants will discuss the issues of land and natural resources, security, and recovery and development. During day two, they will discuss administration and democracy, identity, and reconciliation.
By facilitating a broad and inclusive consultation process, the DDDC has created a neutral space for Darfurians to freely and openly discuss and put forth practical ideas for meaningful peace and reconciliation in Darfur. Working closely with its partners and stakeholders, the DDDC will feed Darfurian views learned during the South Darfur civil society organization’s consultation, and previous and future consultations, into the Darfur peace process.
Seeking peace and reconciliation through dialogue and mediation to resolve conflict within and between communities is a deeply rooted Darfurian tradition. By engaging conflicting groups, restoring confidence, building trust, and promoting open and transparent dialogue to overcome grievances and agree on common grounds to achieve sustainable peace, the DDDC is a continuation of this tradition.
